Scenes from the Weekend: 8/18/2025

It’s Monday!

And the first day of Kindergarten for so many kiddos we know.

Ishu’s still chugging along in his Montessori mixed-age classroom because that’s what works for us right now. But we are excited for his friends as they start brand new adventures!

Like I mentioned in this post, we went to the beach on Thursday for a final hurrah before these kiddos started school. The weather was so perfect. And the kids were so happy. And after my body calmed down from the initial shock of the Thunderbirds practicing (I thought practice for the Air & Water Show started Friday, not Thursday!), it was really cool to get to watch them fly without the weekend crowds.

Afterward, we rinsed off at the splash pad and then headed to Ishu’s dentist appointment. Riyu watched the whole thing and immediately declared, “Riyu’s turn!” Luckily, they had room in the schedule and squeezed him in for a little cleaning too. That was fun to watch. Both boys loved the TV on the ceiling and, of course, the goody bags with those random plastic toys that last about four seconds but bring them all the joy.

Later that evening, after everyone was cleaned up, we went to Music in the Park. We ate some homemade salad and Robert’s Pizza and listened to some one-man band entertain a bunch of kiddos while catching up with some friends. It was a really great day and a nice way to ease back into our Chicago lives. I’m so glad we still get a little bit of summertime Chicago.

On Friday, Ishu went back to school. And I took Riyu on a 1:1 date to the museum.

We came home, he napped, and I made myself a salad with all the fixings my mama sent home with us.

In the evening, the kiddos watched How to Train Your Dragon. And I finished (and loved!) this Kristin Hannah novel. (Seriously, is there a book of hers I don’t love?! I don’t think so).

That night, Ishu tried his usual bedtime stalling tricks. When I reminded him that his delays were cutting into story time, he said, “The time is so boring and the world is so fun.” And I’m pretty sure he needs that on a T-shirt because that is so him. And, really, every 5-year old.

On Saturday, we did a much-needed Costco run (the kids made a lunch out of the samples, of course). Ishu and I went swimming during Riyu’s nap. And then, in the evening, the kids (and Ankur) watched How to Train A Dragon 2 and I finished this book (and resonated so deeply with all the teacher stuff).

And on SUNDAY, we celebrated Riyu’s birthday.

We went to the park.

We got Ishu’s haircut.

I got a pedicure.

We ate at the new CAVA in Streeterville.

And then, in the evening, we did a massive fam video call to cut the big boy’s cake.

He was more excited about the candles than the cake I think.

But still pretty excited about the cake. Especially the mini ice cream cones on top.

And just like that, we’ve got a TWO YEAR OLD.

It’s MONDAY again. Here we go.
