Avoid Hangry Kids At School: On-The-Go Snacks to Prevent Hunger

One of the funny things about being a teacher is that you wear multiple hats. Sure, you provide students with the content and skills to master the standards. But you’re also a comedian, a mediator, a counselor. You’re an artist, an actor, and a mother.

And, at times, you’re also a snack pantry.

I quickly learned that many of my students would come to school without breakfast, lunch, or other snacks to keep them chugging along throughout the day.

It’s nearly impossible to get a group of students engaged in what’s being taught if their basic needs aren’t being met. So, I made sure to keep my fridge and desk drawers stocked with all sorts of goodies.

One of my go-to purchases is the NABISCO Multipacks. It’s affordable (hello, teacher salary!), individually wrapped, and provides students with a variety of options to choose from (Oreo Minis, Nutter Butter bites, and mini Chips Ahoy). It’s also pretty convenient given that Walmart is my go-to for a lot of school supplies, food items, and other household products.

One of the things I love about shopping at Walmart – in addition to the pricetag – is the fact that you can find items in bulk. My cart is typically full to the brim of supplies (and snacks!) for my students. It’s a one-stop shop for everything we need.

I cannot tell you enough how much having these snacks has saved my lessons from being tossed out the window.

The kids appreciated it so much, the parents appreciated that their kids weren’t ravenous when they got home from school, and I appreciated that there were no HANGRY students in my classroom. (Because I know what HANGRY feels like and no good ever comes from someone under that kind of stress).

Anyway, the reason I bring it up today is to bring awareness around a contest that’s going on right now. By completing a few social media actions today, you can win a $50 Walmart gift card or you can be one of two lucky winners who wins a $200 Walmart gift card!

I-C will randomly select 14 winners from all program entries and will facilitate fulfillment of the winning prizes.

  1. I even keep snacks around during lessons for myself! Particularly since I’ve been pregnant…but it’s a good excuse to say it’s snack time for the kids, right? 🙂

  2. Fun giveaway! And that’s really sweet that you’d bring snacks for your students. It does suck to hear about all these kids that don’t have snacks or even full meals throughout the day unless the school provides.
