A Lesson from Lorelai Gilmore

I’m re-watching Gilmore Girls for the first time since watching it all those years ago.

I gotta say. It totally hits different as a mother now. A mama who wants the world to be a little softer, a little kinder, a little different than how it was when she was growing up.

It’s funny watching something you loved in your twenties (or teens!) and realizing how much more you notice now. The tiny details, the pauses, the humor that once flew over your head. I obviously know how everything in the series goes down, but I’d forgotten all the little things. The witty banter. The one-liners that hit just right.

I’m only a few episodes into Season 1, but I’m loving it so much. It’s the perfect fall re-watch. Comforting and familiar, but somehow new again.

There was one moment in a recent episode that made me laugh out loud. But then also made me realize how TRUE IT IS.

Emily, Lorelai’s mother, tries to install DSL in their home. She insists that Rory needs faster Internet now that she’s at Chilton, her fancy private school.

Lorelai quickly responds, “Well we like our Internet slow. We can turn it on, walk around, do a little dance, make a sandwich. With DSL, there’s no dancing, no walking, and WE’D STARVE.”

HAHAH, even as I’m typing it, it’s making me chuckle.

It reminds me of the Internet meme that was like, “Remember when we had to turn on the Internet? Well now we all live here.”

That little exchange between Emily and Lorelai stuck with me.

Because, yes, things can be done so much faster now. There are more efficient ways to get through our to-dos, our days, our lives.

But there’s beauty in the slow.

And sandwiches.

So, here’s a reminder from Lorelai Gilmore. Sometimes faster ain’t better, y’know?

Okay, I’m off! We are in Salt Lake City for the week with the grandparents! Ankur’s here for a conference and we are tagging along for a fun lil adventure for us all.

Have a happy Wednesday!
