Another beautiful summer morning over here!
Ankur has been trying to ‘sleep in’ since he doesn’t start ’til later these days. But, it’s pretty impossible with the sun shining off the buildings right across from it.
I guess we could sleep with the blinds closed, but what’s the fun in that?
I, personally, don’t mind getting up so early when it’s with the sunshine. It feels like a more natural wake-up than, y’know, waking up because a toddler shoved me all the way to the edge of the bed.
Yesterday, we met up with Jenn and Max and walked over to the aquarium. Between our membership here and to the Children’s Museum, I feel like we’re gonna be busy busy bees this year.
Even though we just went a few days ago with Katie, Ishu ran around the place like he was seeing everything for the first time.
We stayed until noon-ish and it was clear that, once the dolphin show was over, it was time for these two little guys to nap. Similar to this past weekend, we decided to take the Water Taxi back toward the Navy Pier. And, right outside the ticket kiosk, was A FREAKING BAT.
Thank God Ishu was in his stroller because you KNOW he’d be trying to touch that thing.
I guess, he’s technically free to touch bats for another 1.5 years, yeah? He’s protected. Ha.
But yikes. And it was alive. Jenn toed it thinking it was dead and it lifted up its head and gave us a look.
One lady had the audacity to tell us bats were good and I wanted to yell at her and say, DID YOU HAVE TO TAKE YOUR ONE YEAR OLD TO GET FIVE ROUNDS OF RABIES SHOTS. BATS ARE GOOD AND YOU CAN ALSO NOT WANT TO SEE ANY MORE BATS, PLEASE AND THANK YOU.
Okay, moving on.
Then we got home and Ishu took a 3.5 HOUR NAP.
When he woke up, the three of us walked over to the Navy Pier for a Bastille Day event.
At one point, we wandered into the pavilion and Ishu watched a big kid by the gum-ball machine and was so awed by him turning the little thing-y and seeing a red ball pop out.
He tried to take it from this 8-year old kid.
And I started to step in.
The kid quickly said, “No, no, he can have it. Can he have it?”
I responded, “Yeah, but it’s yours. He doesn’t need it.”
He said, “No, no, he can have it!”
I looked at Ishu and said, “He’s giving it to you. Can you tell him thanks?”
Ishu kept staring at the ball.
The kid continued watching him, smiling. I said to Ishu, “Can you tell him thanks or give him a high five?”
And Ishu walked over to high-five this kid.
This sweet little 8-year old boy put his hands on his knees like he just ran a race and looked up at me and said, “OKAY, NOW THAT WAS WORTH IT!”
Ha.
I LOVE CHILDREN.
Then, at 9pm, we watched the fireworks for the FIRST TIME EVER since moving here. Yes, it’s been a year. I know. I’m so happy we did it. We got a Potbelly sammy to share, sat on our quilt at the edge of the lake, and watched 10 minutes of fireworks together.
Ishu was squealing, shouting “FIRE-BURK” over and over and over again. Pointing at the sky saying, “DOOK AT THAT. DOOK AT THAT.”
It was his first time seeing fireworks this up close and it was one of those core memories I’ll keep in my brain forever.
It was also made extra special by the supermoon! Right as the fireworks ended, the massive orange moon slowly made its way into the sky.
What a good night. What a good freakin’ night.
Summers in Chicago are just something else. Tonight there’s live music at Millenium Park and then, this weekend, we’re gonna head to the Tacos y Tamales festival in Pilsen.
Hope you all got a chance to see that moon last night. SO BEAUTIFUL.
Happy Friday eve!
[…] And, lucky for him, they changed the structure for this session where kids could *choose* to do art OR do open play. And, of course, my child was the only one who didn’t even realize they pulled out the tables for art. He just wanted to play with all the sea creatures. (Also, the theme for yesterday was ocean animals and, well, perfect timing because we’ve been going to the aquarium). […]
