Happy four-day work week!
Four day work weeks always throw me off, but I’m not one to complain about the extra weekend day! Especially because our little guy needed a little extra love from his mama and papa this weekend.
Friday
On Thursday, Ishu touched a bat that happened to be hanging out by the river. On Friday, I wrote this post and thought nothing more of it. Because I was pretty sure the bat opened up its mouth after I pulled Ishu away.
But then several of you messaged after reading that post saying we should call his pediatrician regardless. Because bat bites are so small, you can’t see them. And they carry a lot of diseases so touching one is probably grounds to check in with a healthcare team.
Well, ya’ll were right. When I took him into the clinic, the nurse said they’d definitely administer the injections if he touched one.
And I am CERTAIN he stroked the bats’ back.
So they sent us to the emergency room because they don’t typically keep the rabies vaccines in their clinic.
Ishu and I walked the couple blocks to the ER and waited about an hour for the nurse to administer the first two shots.
My little kiddo has never been a fan of the doctors’ office. He starts crying at the very beginning of the appointment, the minute you try to take his clothes off to put him on the scale.
So, there were a lot of tears – on and off. Every time a nurse came in to do any small thing.
The most tears being after they put two shots in his thighs.
Poor baby.
Our room was right next to the nurse’s station so I’m pretty sure they weren’t PLANNING to give Ishu anything, but the doctor walked in with a pinwheel. And once he had that shiny thing on a stick, the tears stopped and all was forgotten.
By the time we got home, I was too exhausted to think about dinner so we ordered delivery.
Mac & cheese for the tired baby.
And burger/sandwich for the tired mama and papa.
After he fell asleep, Ankur and I finished watching Encanto. (My second time, Ankur’s first). I can see now why everyone watches it 2394823 times. The music, alone, makes me all tingly and happy.
(Over the course of the weekend, Ishu fell in love with the music as well. And he always asks for “Mee-ya-cle” (Miracle) when he wants us to play the soundtrack.
Saturday
On Saturday, we woke up and Ishu helped me make some breakfast tacos. He did a great job mixing the eggs and throwing the chopped veggies in the pan.
We used the rotis ‘specially sent to us with love from New York! They were more like baby breakfast burritos than tacos. But, I’ve learned that if I call something a “taco,” Ishu is more likely to eat it. Ha.
After breakfast, we Portaled with the grandparents!
We always try to Portal with the grandparents at least once over the weekend. But it was extra nice to have both sets of grandparents on at the same time! Ishu was happy to show off his basketball skills with his always-loving, always-supportive audience.
Lunch was Jersey Mikes sammies with a side of Doritos leftover from our Encanto watch party!
Ishu had eaten plenty of his taco, so we weren’t expecting him to want anything when we ate lunch. But, turns out, he’s just like his Mama and Masi and will never turn down a JMs sandwich. He inhaled his papa’s sandwich – jalapeños and onions and all. Luckily, we are a family who orders Giant sized sammies so there is plenty to go around!
After lunch, Ankur went in to our room to study while Ishu and I played with sidewalk chalk. But, since it was too cold to go outside, we just drew all over our living room floor. And before your eyes pop outta their sockets, I just wanna say CLEAN-UP IS A BREEZE. It only took a minute to wipe down everything with a wet towel.
Then, after we cleaned up the floor, we cleaned up Ishu. Who thought his body was also a canvas for the chalk.
He spent nearly an hour splashing in the tub. This kid and water. I mean, most kids and water, am I right? It’s the cure for everything!
After bedtime, Ankur and I watched the first half of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. I wasn’t impressed. The ratings for the movie are relatively high and I don’t quite understand why.
Either way, we were happy to get through it so we can start watching Hawkeye!
Sunday
Sunday morning, I left the apartment and got a massage and then picked up some groceries before heading home. I decided that winters here aren’t TERRIBLE. It just feels oh-so-much harder with a toddler. Like, I can deal with a tiny bit of cold to go out and do things. But to throw a toddler in the mix?! That’s like an all-day PROJECT.
We spent a lot of the day FaceTiming with family.
The three of us also did a short, Sweat workout. It wasn’t supposed to be short. But, about halfway through, Ishu thought he should be the boss of the phone (which we were using to follow along with the workout). And Ankur and I were both more-than-happy to call it quits halfway through.
We are easing our way back in, people. It’s hard.
Monday
Day 2 of Ishu’s shots. #3 shot of 5. Poor kid.
Luckily, we had Ankur with us this time. He’s a calm presence through it all. We waited for about an hour, again, for them to order and deliver the vaccine.
Thankfully, we brought some books with us this time and that kept Ishu’s attention for a little bit. He also managed to explore every nook and cranny of that room. He touched all the buttons and squatted down real low to check out the different features of the bed.
It was not lost on me that this same intense curiosity is what landed us in this room in the first place.
Finally, Nurse Ola came in and administered the shot. There were tears, of course. But, again, so grateful Ankur was there to help us through it all.
After we left the hospital, we went to breakfast at Wildberry.
Ishu must have been starving because he inhaled this plate of scrambled eggs before Ankur and I even got our breakfast.
I was reminiscing about our first trip to this restaurant. It was the first place we went out to eat when we first moved to Chicago. And I remember feeling so flustered then. Trying to figure out where we should put our stroller. Trying to entertain him the whole time while – simultaneously – trying to eat my breakfast. It felt so overwhelming.
And now?
Now I could actually slow down and savor my food. Either he’s gotten older and more experienced at eating out. Or we’ve gotten better at navigating the whole thing. Maybe a little of both.
After breakfast, we tried to go to the park. But none of us were dressed appropriately for stomping around in the snow. So we ended up leaving after about 10 minutes.
We spent the rest of the day hanging out indoors, watching Curious George and Encanto.
And that was our weekend!
Lots of screen time and delivery and laziness. But it was exactly what we all needed.
Now to kick off a new week! Temps are supposed to get in the 40s today so you KNOW we will be outdoors at some point.
Hope you all had a great weekend and stay away from bats!

Awww poor ishu!! It’s amazing how quickly they can get into trouble but I’m sorry this little experience landed him in the ER. Thank goodness for calming nurses/doctors, pinwheels and distractions. Sounds like you had an eventful weekend. And I need to get better at bringing Mila out in the cold. I took her to a a health food store last week and the temperature hovered in the teens and between the stroller and bundling her up and struggling with the car seat I realized next time maybe I should go it alone…but Mila loves these little adventures soo much!
Charlotte recently posted…What’s up, weekend 1/14

I admire your determination to get things done despite the added challenge of winter. It’s like you’re tackling a whole new level of parenthood obstacle course! And hey, FaceTiming with family sounds like a lovely way to stay connected, especially during these colder months when outdoor activities might be limited.
