Day 7: Nuremberg and Our Farewells

We’ve reached the final day of our trip. I’ve had so much fun sharing some of the highlights from our river cruise adventures. And, selfishly, it was exciting for me to get to relive all the fun memories our family had by recounting the big events from our week abroad!
On the final day of our trip, we had a chance to explore Nuremberg. The city is mainly known for the Nuremberg trials that were held there in the 1940s when members of the Nazi party were prosecuted for planning and carrying out the Holocaust and other war crimes.
We took another guided tour of the city and were able to see Frauenkirche (“Church of our Lady”). It’s located in the main market area where people set up their red and white striped tents and sell pastries and plants and produce.
After the guided tour, we had an hour or so of free time. The plan was to get gelato. And we thought we found a vendor that accepted credit cards because he made two L’s with his fingers and connected them to form a rectangle. And then put his thumb up. Which we interpreted as, “Credit card? I take it.” So, we ordered our cups and cones of gelato and then when we handed over our credit card, he said “Only euros.” At which point, we were really confused. And he was really angry. So he dumped the delicious-looking Snickers gelato back into his display case. Womp womp. Language barriers suck. I should have probably practiced a few crucial phrases before we entered Germany. (Like, for example, “Do you take credit card?” Or, “Where can we get food?” Or, “Where’s the wine at?“)
In any case, we survived. It was probably a sign from the universe telling me to slowwwwww down on all the delicious food. (I can’t help it! It’s the best part about traveling!)
Anyway, now for some mushy gushy stuff. I didn’t really get into all the specifics about our trip. Like the jokes we made or the funny things the parents did. (<—Like, for example, they requested access to the cruise’s speaker system and microphones on one lazy afternoon so that they could do karaoke. I’M NOT JOKING!).
They’re the most unique bunch of people you will ever meet. They’re loud and festive. They’ll strike up conversation with just about anyone. Even when there’s a language barrier. The 15-year old me may have tried to cower away from all this animation and energy – embarrassed that we were being “too insistent,” or “too friendly,” or “too noisy.” And, sure, there may have been a few times where I stood my ground and demanded the selfie stick and photographs take a back seat. But, at the end of the day, our family is a unique one. And I am so blessed that I got to be plopped right smack-dab in the center of them this week.
While I enjoyed seeing all the sites, trying all the food, and learning about a culture I’ve never been exposed to before, my favorite part of the trip was doing it with my family. I may forget the name of the castle we visited in Dürnstein. I may never recall all the stories our tour guide shared with us. But, I will always remember the time I took a trip with the people I loved and embraced every moment with them.
I’m a pretty lucky girl.

I took a trip to the Caribbean with my family in February and it was so lovely to have long, uninterrupted quality time with them. It sounds like you guys had a great trip, I’d love to do a European river cruise one day!

What an amazing trip – you certainly made memories that will last a lifetime. I just can’t get over how beautiful the Frauenkirche is!
I love being with my family! I don’t see extended family much, but my immediate family are some of my favorite people. I went to London last September and I was lucky to have my mom, sister, and aunt with me and it was such a great trip.

I’ve heard it’s beautiful there, that church is lovely. Our entire family of four hasn’t taken a trip together in a couple of years.
