March Lately

Good morning! Hope you all enjoyed the first day of Spring! It didn’t feel very “spring-y” over here. It’s still a bit chilly outside. But the temperatures have increased to the 40s-low 50s which I appreciate. If we’re not getting any snow days, I think it’s high time for warmer temperatures.

I’m trying to head into the gym early this morning to get my workout over with, but before I go, I wanted to share what I’ve been up to as of late. (If you’re interested, here’s what was up in January and in February). Play along in the comments and share what you’ve been up to as of late! Or, if you’ve got your own March Lately posts, link them up below!

If you follow me on Facebook, you may have seen my post about this book. I’m only about halfway through, but I’ve been enjoying JD Vance’s memoir about growing up in the Appalachian area. I find it hard to articulate to my family and friends what it’s like to live here. In this beautiful countryside that is obscured by environmental waste and litter. It’s filled with the nicest people in the world, yet also scattered with drug addicts and corruption. It’s full of contradictions. You must read his memoir. Whether you’ve lived in the Appalachian area or not. It’s thought-provoking and opens your eyes up to what life is like in middle America.

Watching Lately:

It’s pretty difficult to tear me away from Game of Thrones right now. (I’m now on Season 4 and more addicted than ever before). But, this past weekend, Ankur and I decided to give HBO Go a break and drove up to Knoxville to watch Lion in theaters. We’re a little late to the game, but we knew it was a must after it was nominated for the Oscars. Our family and friends have also raved about it for the past few months. So we knew we were in for a treat. If you’ve been living under a rock (or live in rural TN and haven’t heard of this movie), I highly recommend it! It’s a book turned movie, but a real life story of Saroo Brierly, a man who used Google Earth to rediscover his childhood life.

Playing Lately:

Aside from our trip to Knoxville and binge watching Game of Thrones, our weekend was spent at the coffee table. Playing Bananagrams. There’s something dangerously addicting about this game. But in a good way. In a way that I am so very present and mindful while playing. It’s almost like completing a puzzle. Your attention and focus can’t be on anything else in order for the task to be completed. The pieces are all you can focus on if you want to win.

Eating Lately:

After watching Lion in Knoxville, we stopped by Tandur – the Chipotle-styled Indian restaurant that I went to a few weeks ago. We started with the chicken samosas and then ordered two chicken dishes to share. If butter chicken had no calories and my stomach was able to hold an enormous amount of food, that’s what I’d like to stuff my face with. Please and thank you.

Listening Lately:

I still can’t get over Alessia Cara’s album. I also can’t get over the fact that she’s only 17 years old. She’s my go-to at the gym, when I’m at home cooking dinner, when I’m driving in my car. I love her voice and I love her catchy music.

Drinking Lately:

While in Knoxville, we visited Bob’s Liquor store to re-stock our dry-county cabinets. Normally, I pick up the same things I always get. But this time, Deep Eddy’s Grapefruit vodka caught my eye. I mixed some of the vodka with the grapefruit La Croix and it was perfect. I’ve found myself a new favorite pink drink. This might be dangerous.

Craving Lately:

Click to buy Joseph’s Pita Bread on Amazon!

I mean, is there ever a day when I’m not craving pizza though? Probably not. This shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Questions of the Day:

  • What are you eating lately? Watching lately? Playing lately?

  5. Most of this post contains things I WANT to do, lol. Hillbilly Elegy has been on my list for a while (I live in OH and travel south through the mountains for nearly all vacations- so it really interests me) and I’m dying to see Lion. Umm… Tandur sounds AMAZING. I’ve been to the Chinese and sushi and Italian and stir-fry Chipotle-like restaurants, but not India food!

  6. Hillbilly Elegy sounds like a fascinating book! I’m putting it on my GoodReads list.

Lately, we have been eating more Crock-Pot meals to help with meal planning and to free up my husband’s day with our son. $5 Dinners has been a blessing – and delicious!

  7. I love this post idea. I might have to link up. Do you know how much sugar Deep Eddy’s has? I tried to look online but didn’t see anything.
Bananagrams? Mr. J and I are always playing games. I will have to check that out.
All that food looks so amazing!!

  8. MARCH! I cannot believe you’re almost over! How nuts. Although I Have to say, I am glad my husband’s birthday is out of the way because I always get a little anxious about it!

  9. Hillbilly Elegy has just made it on my goodreads list. I love to read about people’s experiences in places that I can’t really understand on my own!
And chipotle style Indian food – that is a wonderful-sounding restaurant.

  10. Everyone has told me to see Lion! It will be a while before I can go see a movie but it looks great!

  11. March has gone by quick! I have been watching a lot of Netflix shows with my husband in the evening once our kids head to bed. We like The Blacklist and Marvel shows, and NCIS, etc.

Eating lately? Pizza lol. Bad pregnancy craving.

  12. I really like your “March Lately” post idea! It is always nice to get a better picture of the person behind the blog and this is a simple and fun way to share. Plus, I love finding new things to try…like that Joseph’s Pita Bread! Yum!

  13. I just finished the Red Rising trilogy (I’m a huge sci-fi fan) and I must say the books were amazing. I’m halfway through Unwind, the first of 4 books in a series (can you tell I like book series? LOL!) and it’s OK so far. We’ve been so behind movies lately, heck we’re behind on our PVR! We do want to watch Lion (though maybe I’d read the book first). Spring? What spring? Haha!

  14. I’ve heard a lot about Hillbilly Elegy and look forward to reading it myself. My first job out of college was working with such populations. While it wasn’t in the Appalachian area, there were a lot of similarities in regard to the hardship, pride, and attitude of that part of the country.

  15. I’ve heard such good things about Lion – I definitely need to see it. I also LOVE butter chicken – so does my whole family including my 3 year old. He always asks for spicy chicken and rice 🙂 We have a great Indian restaurant in town but I was going to go bankrupt so I found a great and pretty easy recipe and now we try to make it home (at least as often as we order it in :))!

Just read Great Small Things by Jodi Picoult – its a terrific book I highly recommend!

  16. While my lately isn’t quite as fun as yours is, I started a new business and have been working crazy hard to get that going. I am hooked on the TV show Timeless and APB, they are amazing.

  17. Thanks for the book recommendation! I am always looking for new books to read and am really on a memoir/biography kick these days.

  18. It sounds like you’ve been so busy lately! That is the first time I’ve heard of “Lion” – it sounds really interesting – I might have to give it a go 🙂

  19. That book Hillbilly Elegy looks very interesting. I like books that narrate human struggle and eventually conquering the odds. I usually draw inspiration from books in that genre. I’m getting a copy of that book. Great find. Thanks.

  20. I keep seeing Hillbilly Elegy pop up in my life – so many people I respect have recommended it as a way to get outside of my “liberal elite” bubble and understand the mindset of a huge portion of the country that I don’t get the chance to interact with. Also, I LOVE Alessia Cara’s song “River of Tears” – I saw a video of her performing it live and fell in love! She’s so talented – I can’t believe she’s only 17 either!

  21. I think I could eat pizza and avocados every day. That Indian food looks delicious–just had dinner with my bestie last week and ordered my favorite–malai kofta–and still dreaming about it 🙂

Gah! I need to watch this movie!! Looks so so good!

That book sounds interesting. I don’t know much about the Appalachian area, but lovrle any book that Slavia small town living 🙂

    Xoxo

  24. I lI’ve ypur Lately posts. It’s like a glimpse into your life.I read about the movie Lion I have read all parts of the book Game of Thrones. Have felt so irritated that never watched it.The book is awe inspiring in detail and intricacy but too dark

  25. The food looked amazing there. I would never have thought putting chipotle and Indian food together in the same sentence let alone as a good. It does sound yummy and I will have to try it out should I ever get the chance.

  26. Recently, after Beauty and the Beast – am watching the rerun of Sex and the City for blog post inspirations 🙂 I would love to watch Lion 🙂

  27. I need to check out this book! I grew up in Appalachia and now that I’ve been away for so long I often miss those little nuances that you can only find in that region. Thanks for this recommendation!

  28. Lately I’ve been watching Jane The Virgin on Netflix and I really recommend it! I’ll have to check out Lion… I’ve barely seen any of this year’s Oscar movies!

  29. Hey girl!

You and Kim are the inspiration for a new link up we’re thinking of doing at the beginning of every month, so thank you for your inspiration.

Your Indian food has me salivating at my desk currently. LOL! I am dying to see Lion but haven’t yet. I’ve heard so many great things about the film.

I hope you have a lovely day hun! xo

  30. That food looked so good! We need a Tandur where I live. I loooove samosas, especially the Potato or Lentil Samosas!! I could go for some pizza too! Now I’m hungry!

  31. I’m glad you mentionned Lion because I really want to watch it but I haven’t had the opportunity… I saw Split and Nocturnal Animals lately. I preferred the last, I think it was very well done… I hadn’t heard about the book you mentioned but it looks very interesting! I’m mostly reading stupid books to relax before sleeping because I’m working on my thesis so all the other reading has to do with my subject, no real personal reading until I’m done!
