Fun Facts Friday: 11/18/16

Good morning and happy Friday! We made it to the best day of the week. And the best part about this particular Friday is that next week is only a 2-day work week. So those Sunday blues that usually come on Saturday night? They’ll probably be extra mild this week.

But, before I get too ahead of myself talking about the end of the weekend, let’s talk about today! On the agenda this evening is Brenda’s Step Aerobics class. (I haven’t been since last Saturday! It’s hard to get myself to leave the apartment for her 6:15 class on Tuesdays and Thursdays when it’s so dark and cold outside). After class, we’ve got our Book Club meeting.

The Help

I haven’t finished the book yet, but I’ve been loving it. It’s also interesting to read from the lens of someone who just moved from an urban area in California to a small town in rural Tennessee. Because, though this story takes place in the 1950s-1960s when the civil rights movement was going on, so much of what is said sounds like it’s taking place HERE in 2016. But maybe that’s just my liberal elitism talking.

Anyway, I’ll be back on Monday to report on our weekend adventures, but before I sign off for the weekend, here are some random tidbits from the week.

  • The Christmas decorations are making their debut this weekend.

Chester. 2016-2017. May you rest in peace.

I have been waiting ever-so-patiently to whip out the lights and the stockings. But, this weekend, they’re all coming outta the closet. A Christmas tree farm nearby is opening their doors TODAY. Which means, at some point this weekend, I’ll be picking out and naming my new pine-friend.

  • I’ve been slacking on my Weight Watchers game.

    Weight Watchers

I really like food. Especially leftover Halloween candy. But, not going to Brenda’s class this week in ADDITION to the M&Ms and Mini Twix bars has got me feeling a little bloated and yuck. Today is a new days (my weekly points restart!) and my BFF is jumping on board the WW train again too. So, I’m going to do this. Again. (And I’ll probably need some friendly encouragement and inspiration next week when I’m standing in front of pumpkin pie and mashed potatoes).

  • Vanessa is starting a “Women’s Circle Across Borders” through Google Docs.

In the past two years, many of us have slowly packed up and moved out of San Jose. I miss it every day, but one thing that I miss the most is our monthly Women’s Circle check-ins. It’s not often that you come across a group of women so loving, so encouraging, and so soul-filling. I am excited to keep up with their lives and also provide/receive that love virtually. The opportunity to reflect on things in a safe, supportive environment is something that is challenging to find here. So I’m excited that ‘Nessa is starting this up! Perfect. Timing. Because I feel like an emotional roller-coaster over here and the thing that can usually calm my emotions down is a good debriefing session with the goddesses!

  1. I’m just starting a new police/crime thriller series, (literally a few pages in) so I am very early on in the reading. The Help is a great book, and I can tell you from my mom’s perspective (first hand experience with that side of things) very close to home (she grew up in a fairly equality-minded household, but she knew others who did not).

  2. Oh my!…I have tons of books on my kindle that I can’t seem to get through.
This weekend we’ll be celebrating my daughter’s 9th birthday and also organizing the party for next week. Other than that, it is the same old routine.

  3. Hi there! I’m currently reading “Me Before You” -again-. It’s such a heartbreaking book (my opinion). And I haven’t started decorating just yet, in my country it’s more common to start decorating for Christmas after “Sinterklaas” (:

  4. Lol
I’ve brought out the Christmas lights and I’m only waiting before I light them up. 🙂
Actually, I’m ready an autobiography of one the greatest writers from my country, Chinua Achebe.
    I love it.
This weekend would be pretty busy for me — we’re moving again and I really can’t wait!

  5. I’m reading the collected works of Flannery O’Connor. American literature is my favorite! Our plan is to decorate this weekend. Can’t do it early enough ;-). One month is simply not enough time to enjoy the Christmas spirit. We also have an annual tradition of each of us selecting a new ornament from the cute $3 ornament section at Target. Haha. I always end up getting something fox-themed. They’re just so cute!

    Have a great weekend!

  6. Love The Help – it’s so good. And yes to Christmas decorations – I will get mine out this weekend as well!
Totally slacking on my weight loss, too. 😉
    Happy Friday xxx

  7. I haven’t read The Help yet, although sadly I watched the movie first (rookie mistake!), I’ve heard it’s incredible, though. I wish books were cheaper! I wouldn’t have to haunt the bookstore and read in there, then!

  8. I read The Help a couple years ago and really liked it, I should read it again! I’m currently reading (well listening to) ‘Daring Greatly’ by Brene Brown and then physically reading my favorite childhood series, the Little House on the Prairie books. I haven’t read them since I was very young so reading them again now is bringing me so much joy!

  9. I need a good book to read, it’s been too long since I picked one up! This weekend I’m reuniting with old friends and eating til we drop! 🙂

  10. Huzzah! A fellow early-Christmaser! Well, a weekend early, but we’ll count it. We put ours up last weekend and even then we waited longer than we wanted to. 🙂 Christmas decor just warms up a house so much and we can’t get enough of it.

  11. I looooove The Help. I’m just now starting The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty. I have not gotten my Christmas decorations up because I’m not looking forward to having to police my toddler from touching them lol. This weekend I’m on vacation in Palm Springs! Woohoo!

  12. I have The Help but haven’t gotten around to reading it. I’m finishing up a Stuart Woods and then onto his current book (easy reading).

I told my husband this morning we’re discussing plans for Christmas and getting our shiz together so we can plan accordingly. It’s cute because this is the first year he’s taken interest in the tree and putting it up in the window. 🙂

I hope you have a wonderful long weekend (jealous!!!).

    🙂

  13. To answer your questions: I am currently reading Your Best Year 2017 by Lisa Jacobs. I have started decorating for Christmas this week simply because we just moved in and I’ve been coming across decorations that weren’t packed with the main Christmas items. This weekend we will continue to unpack and make our new home ‘ours’.

  14. My outdoor lights are going up this week. Still not sure if my tree will be up before the Turkey is here or not. LOL Im feeling really impatient this year. This weekend we are just hanging out and getting ready for a week with hubby and the boys home. Have a good weekend!

  15. We dont put up the Christmas Tree until Christmas over here. The tradition is to set it up on the actual day of so no tree and decorations for us just yet.

  16. I’ve finished with “What I know for sure” by Oprah Winfrey and is currently reading Good News (New Testament). Christmas decoration usually starts after US Thanksgiving for my family.

  17. We are up for Christmas decorations as well as it is one of those important tradition we follow every year. Honestly, I haven’t read the The Help yet, but would love one such good read anytime!

  18. I’ve never heard about that book and it would be nice to learn more about it! I think it’s awesome that you’re decorating for Christmas!

  19. I’m still reading “Snow” by Orhan Pamuk. It’s a bit of a difficult read, because it’s so political, but I don’t want to give up on it. 🙂
The Help sounds interesting, the movie was really good, but sometimes it’s difficult to read a book after seeing the movie.

  20. I am currently reading Digital Marketing magazine and novels by Jorge Luis Borges! As for the Christmas home decor I always start decorating at the end of the December haha 🙂

  21. I love The Help. The only think I’m reading these days are MCAT books. sigh. I’m hoping to start decorating this weekend while spending sometime with friends and family from out of town!

  22. I’ve never heard about the book, but I’m glad that you are 15 more pounds to go this year. These are such a fun facts.
