Fun Facts Friday: 10/14/16

HOORAY! We made it to Friday. After I make it through this inservice day, I am officially ON VACATION. I’m doing a small presentation today for a few teachers, so I’m going to make this post quick so I can get my things in order.

Hope you all have a fantastic Friday and a great weekend! I’ll be back on Monday to share weekend snapshots!

1) Our inservice today is centered around incorporating technology in the classroom. I commend this small little town for trying to do this, but it’s also slightly funny because teachers don’t even check their e-mail weekly.

We were sent an e-mail on Wednesday (which, I’m sure, less than 50% of the teachers read) that told us to bring our passwords for our e-mail. I have a feeling that teachers are going to be spending the entire inservice day filtering through their inboxes that they haven’t opened up for months.

2) Middlesborough has become a “moist” town!

While Claiborne County is still a dry county, our neighboring county, Bell County, is considered to be “moist.” The “moist” requirement means that alcohol can account for only 30 percent of the income of any establishment serving alcohol. This restricts bars from popping up around the town. We haven’t been to Shades Cafe yet to indulge in all the moist-ness, but it makes me a little proud that this town is growing up.

3) Yesterday when I got back home, I ran into our landlord who was fixing something in our neighbor’s apartment downstairs.

When we first moved here in June, I had a really hard time understanding what he said due to his thick accent. But, yesterday, I had no problem keeping up with him. I think I’m adapting to this town. Before you know it, I’ll be adopting the Tennessee twang and saying things like, “I DONE DID THAT ALREADY.”

4) Corporal punishment is still legal in 19 states. That means you can discipline a child at school by “spanking” them. Our school has stopped using “paddling” as a disciplinary method, but it’s still legal.

Just when you think you’re taking two steps forward and joining the 21st century by changing liquor laws in your county, you hear things like this and you’re reminded that you still live – very much – in a world that hasn’t caught up yet.

Questions of the Day:

  • What are your thoughts on disciplining children by “paddling” them?
  • On a lighter note, what are you doing this weekend?

  1. I can’t even begin to imagine the schools disciplining my children. As a child growing up everything didn’t warrant a spanking; so I would wonder about that. I don’t have any specific plans this weekend but, am glad it’s here.

  2. Love the leaving work on Friday meme – that’s probably what I looked like when I left work 3 hours ago – we’re 7-8 hours ahead of the States here in Germany.
    Happy weekend! xxx

  3. Shocked that any town would call itself “moist” given that that’s one of the most unliked words in the human language. I personally have no issue with it but people are so weird! Neat to know there can me a meaning for it besides the usual.

  4. I’m a firm believer it takes a village to raise a child. Some kids do fine with a warning verbally and other seem to need their hiney busted to get in line. I think today’s kids are more out of control than ever. Firm discipline from a young age should alleviate the need for paddling when they get to grade school.

  5. yikes! paddling isn’t exactly my idea of legit in today’s society. Regarding the weekend, I am taking my hubby who is new to Canada to see the fall colours up in Algonquin Park 🙂

  6. I dont believe in spanking. Especially at school. If someone feels the need to spank their child they should do it and not a school teacher. How do you make a child behave or be better by making them feel worse or hurt? Teachers not checking their email weekly???? Stunned and shocked!

  7. How was the presentation at the meeting? I love your leaving work on Friday meme. Do not agree with paddling for discipline. Talking and explaining things can work much better!

  8. I don’t believe in paddling at schools but I do believe in spanking as long as you’re the child’s parent and only if it’s really necessary. Lucky for me my baby girl is such a sweet heart and it’s only had to be done twice. She knows mama means business when I yell or give her a certain look lol.

As for the weekend we wanted to go to the Halloween hunt at great America but it’s sprinkling and I’m still in a cast so I guess I’ll be staying home all weekend while it rains 😭

  9. How did your presentation go? Hope a good number of teachers attended it.
Please tell us all about it on your Mondays blog.
Cheers to your blog readers. Have a great weekend All!!

  10. Curious how effective paddling has been. Also wonder what behaviors/situations it’s used for. Example paddling because a kid hit another kid doesn’t really trach “keep your hands to yourself.” Dislike the word moist in general so would have a hard time trying out moise places. LOVE reading your blog though!

  11. I wish that Friday feeling could happen on Monday ;0 ). I didn’t know that corporal punishment was still legal in some states – though growing up, some of us did see it in action. Some real fun facts to ponder upon.

  12. Interesting facts. I did not know about the “moist” rule for establishments, good to know. I do not agree on having children be spanked for punishment there are other forms of discipline.

  13. Here in Africa, “spanking” is common in most schools and homes, though in a couple schools, it’s strictly forbidden as a lot of people abuse it.
This weekend? I’ve been resting a whole lot, smiling a bit too much and spoiling myself silly 🙂
    Happy weekend,Divya!

  14. No spanking in school but I was lightly spanked when I was little. This is still a thing in Latin American countries. I think I agree it should be alright if it is not taken to the extremes to actually hurting the child.

  15. When you work from home – it’s great because you can take some time for yourself. And Friday’s are the best day. It helps to feel like you’re cheating the 40 hour work week, and you’re ok with that 🙂

  16. It’s crazy to me that it’s still legal to paddle kids in school in some states! Not a fan of that at all!

  17. I love reading your weekly roundup posts! Mine last week was pretty hectic due to work and on weekend, went for a media trip! Now again tomorrow is a Monday and the big week ahead!

  18. We now live in a country where it is illegal to spank our children. I do have to say for our one child who laughed any time I spanked her. I guess it is good. Spanking never worked for her. On the other hand our son responded well to spanking and doesn’t respond as well to time out. So we have been having behavorial issues. Hopefully I can find another way to get through to him.
