Ishu’s newest obsession is with ants. And spiders. And flies.
It’s unclear whether it’s because he’s afraid of them and wants to keep an eye out for them ALWAYS. Or if it’s because he actually enjoys following the trek of an ant from one end of the tree stump to the other.
Either way, it makes me laugh. Because, while other kids are running straight through the gates of the zoo to go see the baby lion cub, my kid is poppin’ a squat at the gates, watching the line of ants go by.
While other kids are running around the park, chasing each other and running to hop on the swing before another kid gets there, my toddler is over at the tree stumps studying each spider.
“Mama, come on,” he says as he pulls at my hand to show me, yet again, another spider.
We’re rolling with it.
I don’t want to project any fears or “EWWW GROSS” mentality about these little insects.
I also don’t want to tell him, “OKAY, BUT LOOK AT WHAT EVERY OTHER KID IS DOING, YOU SILLY PANTS.”
He’s got a unique little brain. And, while it’s typically my tendency to move along and hurry on to the next thing, I embrace that this is what he wants to do right now.
My mother-in-love told me stories of Nikhil (Ishu’s Chacha) coming home with lots of roly-polies in his pant pockets at the end of the day. So, I’m mentally preparing for a future of bugs and worms falling out of Ishu’s clothes.
But right now? For right now, I feel lucky that he hasn’t quite figured out HOW to use a pocket. The coordination required to pick up a bug and open up a pocket and put said bug in the pocket. Well, that’s a little complicated for him. And that is one thing I ain’t teachin’ him.
Happy Tuesday, everyone.
On the agenda today is a meeting in the afternoon, some report writing, and likely, some squatting to look at all the bugs go by.
Hope you have a good one!
