Two Years of Riyaan

Our baby is TWO.

One minute you were curled up on your nursing pillow, drinking mama’s dudu. The next minute, you’re doing somersaults and downward dog (while still insisting on MAMA’S DUDU).

All this to say, you’re somehow still our baby AND a big 2-year old all at once.

You’re still pretty happy letting your brother run the show around here. For now. You watch, you clap, you follow along with his antics like he’s some sort of TV series you’re obsessed with. But I know the second you realize YOU can run the show too, it’s game over for all of us.

Most days you’re the go-with-the-flow kid. Unless you’re being denied a drink. Any drink. Coffee, wine, mama’s dudu. The moment we say no, it’s like the world has ended. You fling yourself down with the kind of drama that deserves an Oscar. Life. Is. Over. Until, of course, you finagle your way into getting a sip.

But, oh, what a joy you are. The sweetest, funniest little ball of energy. You sing your ABCs and Twinkle Twinkle and Om Jai Jagdish Hare. You love music and, on occasion (perhaps to appease your brother), you scream SAPPHIRE at the top of your lungs.

You love your brother. So much. You don’t always appreciate his morning energy. You need a second (and perhaps a sip of mama’s coffee) to get going. But once you’re ready, you think he is THE BUSINESS. He jumps. You jump. He screams. You scream. He says something. You shout it louder. Because if Dada said it, it must be important. But, also, it’s real funny how we watch you parrot him and other people. You notice what people laugh at. And then you try to repeat what was said before the laughter. Watching you is like watching my favorite binge-worthy show. I never want it to end.

You are endlessly affectionate. And let me cover your perfect little cheeks in so many kisses. You’re happiest when you’re smushed up against us. You’ve filled our home with so much love that sometimes I wonder how we ever thought our family was complete before you.

You’re the best best best and we love you so much.

Happy birthday, my perfect two-year-old.
