Good morning! And what a beautiful morning it is!
I’m over here eating leftover pizza for breakfast. (Seriously not joking when I say I could eat pizza for breakfast, lunch, and dinner). I’m also relaxing on the couch – writing this post later than usual – because it is still Fall Break and I’m not forced to wake up at 4:30AM. The fact that I have the next four days off makes me so giddy and excited. And slightly paralyzed because I don’t know how to maximize every second of the day. So, after I publish this post, I’ll probably spend some quality time with my notepad mapping out my goals and activities. (<–Does this make me crazy?)
Before I sign off for the day, I’ll share a couple things that made me so unbelievably happy this week. As usual, feel free to participate in the comments below and tell me what you’re loving this week!
-
Our First Karwa Chauth
We survived our first Karwa Chauth! The moon didn’t appear in the sky until 10:40, which meant that we didn’t actually get to eat dinner until 11PM. But we did it. And we did it together. There is so much controversy around this holiday. About it being sexist and unbalanced. Too traditional and old-fashioned. But, with most of these ancient holidays, we change with the times and we make it our own. We don’t eliminate them. This year, Ankur and I both kept the day-long fast. It was important to our families and it was something special for both of us as newlyweds. (It also felt really good when I got on the scale to find myself down a couple pounds. Although…after this breakfast pizza, I’m sure that’ll change quickly). -
24-Hour Trip to Nashville
Last week, Fay e-mailed me to let me know she’d be in Nashville for a conference. Nashville is 3.5 hours away from Harrogate but since I was on Fall Break, I knew I needed to drive out there and see her! Timing worked out so beautifully because Ankur was done with class early on Monday and had no classes on Tuesday. So, we made a trip out of it! It is always such a treat to see Fay. She’s one of the most wonderful, caring, loving humans I’ve ever encountered and she makes everyone around her so happy. -
Charred Pineapple Mule
Ankur, Fay, and I decided to get Hattie B’s for lunch on Tuesday. (We loved it so much on our roadtrip over here so we knew we needed to get some before heading back to Harrogate!). Since it’s such a hip-and-happening place, we ordered it online so we didn’t have to wait in the long line. We had about an hour to kill until our food was ready so we popped into Tavern down the street for some pre-lunch cocktails. Typically, when I go into a bar, I play it safe and order a cran-vodka or a glass of wine. But, I decided to be adventurous and try one of their signature cocktails, a Charred Pineapple Mule. (Stoli + Charred Pineapple + Ginger Beer + Lime). It was PERFECT. So refreshing – and not in that overly sweet way that I was expecting. Now, I’m on a mission to recreate it. Does anyone know how to char pineapple? -
Keeping in Touch Through E-mail
Everyone has their preferred forms of communication (e.g. phone call, text message, FB message). There are so many different ways to keep in touch. I’ll be completely transparent and say that I am pretty terrible at keeping up with my favorite people. Moving to Eastern Tennessee has made it even harder to stay in contact with people due to the time difference. Phone calls get dropped so often here in the middle of nowhere. Every time I drive to the grocery store, I have to take the tunnel to Kentucky and we always lose service in the tunnel. Text messages are a quick, convenient way to communicate with people, but more often than not, I’ll see a text and then forget to respond because some other pop-up notification on my phone interrupted me. I’m all about the e-mail. I am able to respond to people – with a more thoughtful response – at a time when I’m not distracted or doing something else.
Questions of the Day:
- What’s the last spontaneous trip you went on?
- What method of communication do you prefer most?
- What are you loving this week?

The first and last spontaneous trip Arely and I have ever made was when we drove out to drop sky off at science camp last year. Then we decided to drive a lot further and go to Reno it was such a last minute idea but definitely worth it especially since we got to stop and play in the snow. All we were able to do once we were in Reno was eat breakfast at Denny’s cause then we had to head back to San Jose lol. In just that one day I drove for more then 15 hours straight all because we kept getting lost lol. Getting lost was pretty awesome only cause it just added adventure to our day. We got to see things and places we had never seen before. Normally getting lost I’d get upset but that day I remember I was so happy lol I even remember that the one moment I realized where we were I purposely took a wrong turn and got us lost again only because I knew it would add to our adventure. All in all it was such an amazing day and so many hours well spent with the one I love.
The method I prefer is texting it’s just so easy and if I’m busy driving or doing something I just ask Siri to remind me to text that person back before the end of the day lol 😂
Unfortunately I’m not loving much this week my father is ill and in the hospital so we’ve just been home praying for him to feel better so that he can come home soon
Cristinamarie says
Arely and I definitely need to have more spontaneous days just we haven’t been able to because unfortunately our car isn’t working and we can’t be spontaneous when we’re borrowing someone’s car. Hopefully soon we will have our car fixed or we will probably just go buy a new one then we will be able to be as spontaneous as we can be

Texting has become a more common way for our family to communicate quickly. I am so grateful for it because I can get in touch with my son in college at any time.

My last spontaneous trip was to Honduras. We went with some friends from church as part of a construction team. It was amazing.

I’m near Nashville, and have yet to try Hattie B’s! EVERY time we pass by, there’s a line out the door. I had no idea you could order ahead online! Thanks for this tip. I’m glad you enjoyed your trip to Nash-vegas! 🙂

I can’t remember a spontaneous trip but I did visit family in NJ last month. I am definitely a texter. I don’t like talking on the phone and I am bad at keeping in touch. Nice post. It certainly doesn’t seem as if your husband is sexist so why should it matter, I think it’s nice

I love a good spontaneous trip! I haven’t taken one in a while unless you count the haunted house overnight I went on with my bestie recently and my solo trip to the Bahamas two years ago. THAT was magical.
Pizza for breakfast? I’m in. Also I don’t know much about this holiday, but I’m intrigued!
Hope you’re having a great week, and nice to *meet* you via our Authentic Bloggers group! XOXO

I prefer texting. Every time I get an email I assume it’s my mom yelling at me about something (and yes, I’m almost 40) so I like to stick to texting because I usually know who it will be on the other end.

It’s awesome that you were able to fit in a Nashville trip. That Charred Pineapple Mule does sound really good. I’d try it for sure!

You look beautiful in that picture! I think it’s important to keep traditions but like you said change it to the times. I also love pizza and can eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!

I prefer my landline phone for communicating–but respond pretty quickly to email as well. I don’t remember the last time I went on a road trip–it has been a very long time. Ass for this week–or the last couple of months actually–I’ve been bogged down between my Mom and my clients. I am hoping it calms down SOON!!

I’ve never heard of Karwa Chauth but I’m so glad you told us about it. Sounds like you had a meaningful day together. <3
I'm all about the email. If I get a text or FB message, I read it and forget it. If I get an email at least I can "mark as unread" until I can give it the attention it deserves!

The last spontaneous trip we went on was last week we drove to Finland (about 4 hours) to pick up firewood. I prefer texting for communication unless it is something serious. PS I am happy your first Karwa Chauth went well. Traditions are so important.

I love that you embrace old traditions regardless of others opinions. I dislike when others spout on about how a tradition is no longer appropriate. Therefore, I am so happy you still cherish yours. We do exactly as you say and morph in into our own as the times change. Plus it is exactly that, “A TRADITION” not a way to dehumanize anyone. I am truly interested in this Charred Pineapple concoction you shared. It sounds amazing!!
I need to go on a trip.
I like to talk on the phone.
I’m loving that its Friday.

I think it is great and so very forward thinking when you combine the traditional and the modern for your family. I especially appreciate how you understand how important some traditions are to your parents, and that you respect and continue those. Cheers!

The last spontaneous trip I took was with my BFF a month ago. We packed up and in two hours, went to Philly for the day. We lived in NYC at the time, so it was an easy commute. We spent the day enjoying food, historical landmarks and a few parks. It was really exciting.
