The Simple Things

On Tuesdays, we have swim class in the evenings. So, between pick-up and swim class, I knew we wouldn’t have time to squeeze in an extra activity.

Up until now, most of our advent calendar has been little riddles that Ishu solves and they reveal our activity for the day or night. But since I knew we wouldn’t have time to bake cookies or make a gingerbread house or any of that, I tucked these festive, battery-powered necklaces into the drawers instead.

Ishu was so beyond thrilled. He must have said thank you (unprompted) at least four times. He was just so happy.

And it reminded me that I truly do not need to operate like a crazy person trying to do all the things in December. The simple things make him so freakin’ happy.

He was also so excited that the necklaces came in a 4-pack because it meant he could take two to school and give them to friends. That actually made him more excited than receiving the gift himself. Knowing he could give something real cool to someone else.

And isn’t that all we want for our kids?

To understand that this season is about coziness with the fam, giving (not receiving), and finding joy in the simple things.

He’s real good at this whole thing called life. I could learn a lot from him.

I’m so glad I made this little gift for myself so I can learn from him every day.
