Ishu’s been really into writing words lately. The thing is, he only really knows how to spell his name and the words, “Mama” and “Papa.” But the rest of the words he wants to write, he’ll ask us to spell them out for him.
On occasion, he’ll ask us to spell something like, “Pterodactyl” and then will get very confused that it doesn’t start with a “T.” And we’ve explained to him that some letters are silent in words. Very confusing for a 3-year old brain, I imagine. We don’t expect him to understand it, but we tell him the things anyway.
So, Ishu came back from school on Friday with a certificate for his papa for Father’s Day.
At first, the certificate said it was for, “ANKO.” With a sideways “N.” Ha. We think it’s because he can’t fully say his “r” sound yet. So that’s exactly what it sounds like when he says Ankur’s first name.
Ha.
But when he came home with the certificate and we read it out loud and said “ANKO,” his eyes got big and said, “Oh! I forgot the ‘R!'”
So then he took to it with the Sharpie and corrected it.
When we looked at it again, we pointed to the last letter and said, “What’s that?”
“It’s an A,” he said.
“But now it says ‘Ankura.’ That’s not Papa’s name.”
“No, no, no, no, no. That A is SILENT,” he responded proudly. And so very, very seriously.
Ha.
I LOVE THIS KID.
Have a happy day. Hope that story made you smile as much as it makes me smile. <3
