I’ve always been the baby of the house. Growing up, I was never consulted about family decisions. Sister would always be the go-to person whether it came to picking out cushions for the couch or planning a family trip abroad.
Even as I grew older and eventually caught up to Sister in age, she would, naturally, grow older as well. So I never really caught up.
I was the baby.
And, at 28 years old, I am still the baby.
I don’t mind playing the role of the child. I’m pretty good at it. I don’t have to make decisions. I just follow everyone else. And when I mess up, it’s OK because I’m just the baby and I didn’t know any better.
This weekend, my parents are coming to visit. And, on Monday, they’ll be coming to work with me.
I have been working since I graduated from college. But Monday will be the first time that my parents will get to see my place of work. And they’ll get to see ME at work. And they’ll get to see MY babies.
I am beyond excited to show them that their little baby is a grown-up. That she has responsibilities and children to care for. That she makes important decisions every day, every hour.
I’m excited to give them a peek into this life that I’ve created up here. I may not be consulted about sofa cushions or family trips, but I teach kids how to read. I help other parents make choices and decisions for their kiddos.
I can’t wait until they get to see this other life where I’m not so much “the baby.” The one where I’m a grown-up.
Question of the Day:
- Are you the oldest sibling? Youngest? Middle? Only child?
