Yesterday, Nicole and I met up to get Subway in between all the packing and cleaning craziness. There is one in Harrogate, just two minutes from my house. But it also happens to be the one that gets the most crowded around noon because it’s right across from the university.
When we pulled up to the lot, we saw a number of cars there so we decided to take a little detour to Food City and run an errand beforehand. In hopes that it’d be a little less crowded around 12:30.
Well, on our return, it was even more crowded than it was around noon.
There were two other Subways nearby. One in Middlesboro, Kentucky (where we had just come from). And another in Tazewell (15 minutes in the opposite direction).
Since we had just come from Middlesboro, we decided to drive out to Tazewell.
About 10 minutes into the drive, Nicole exclaimed, “Divya! This is the first place we had lunch together two years ago!”
Two years ago. Nicole – fresh out of college, this was going to be her first job as a teacher. But she was ambitious as shit and showed up at their office with her resume in hand and got herself a job.
She was the one who advised me to just show up at the county office with my resume. And it worked.
Two years ago, we decided to carpool to the Claiborne County SpED professional development session. And had Subway for lunch.
And, though this is a long-winded story about how we ended up at a SUBWAY, it feels super sentimental to me.
Yesterday, we sat in the same booth we sat in two years ago.
Before we were friends. Before she knew my insides and out.
And now, after hundreds of meals and drinks together, we sat down in that same booth not as work colleagues. And not as wives of medical students.
But as real life friends.
Nicole and Stefan are moving to Texas to do their rotations there and I am going to miss her with all the pieces of my heart. But yesterday, as we sat in that booth, I just kept thinking that things continue to come full circle. To remind me just how fortunate I’ve been these past two years.
Questions of the Day:
- Have you ever re-visited the same spot with a completely different mentality or perspective? Where was it? How had you changed?

I love that sentimental feeling you get when you visit some places. There are a lot of places like that for me because so much has changed in the last five years of my life. Some of these places hold good memories and others, not so good.

I love visiting places that hold sentimental memories.
I’m sure that Subway branch will always be special to you and your friend.

I love that you all made a full circle and are very good friends now. Sorry to hear she’s moving further, but I’m sure you two will still remain friends, distance or not.
