Ishu is starting to point to the words.
When he brings a book over to me to read it, I ask him to read the title and he points to the words.
This is one of those pre-reading strategies you hope your little one learns simply by watching an adult read. Concepts of print.
He may not know how to read, but he recognizes that there are words on pages and that’s how adults read to him.
The other day, I pulled out one of our favorites.
Snuggle Puppy.
It used to be that he would get really excited when I got to the end of the page. Because there’s a part where you whisper really low and then get really loud. He used to shriek and get so excited, anticipating for that volume change.
But when we got to that page this time, he cut me off.
He reached over and pointed to the “OOOOOO,” at each individual “O,” and said, “O, O, O, O, O, O.”
Surprised, I started to say, “You know that letter!”
He cut me off again.
“Geen O, blue O, purple O, ded O, ij O, yellow O, geen O,” he said while pointing.
Well, damn.
I mean, 2% of me was sad that he didn’t get a thrill over the whisper-to-shouting. But then 98% of me was like, WHAT? THIS IS NEW STUFF. YOU ARE LEARNING SO MANY NEW THINGS.
You recognize each letter, you know the color, you point to each individual one as you state the color and letter.
I love that he has grown into his books. And will continue growing into them as he learns to read. Can’t wait for the day when he opens up this book to read to me and he’s the one whispering and then getting loud.
It’s blowin’ my dang mind.
