It was a crazy, windy day out yesterday. It’s like things just changed overnight. I went from sweating at the apple orchard over the weekend to pulling out ALL the winter things yesterday afternoon.
Usually, I’ll make a morning trip to the park with Ishu. Before jumping into work and before Bella comes over. But I couldn’t do it.
Yesterday, after drinking my coffee, I peered down at the street to get a view of the trees. And they were all dancing around like crazy. I checked the weather app on my phone and, sure enough, winds were around 25 mph.
So, we stayed home.
And we probably would have remained home all day except that a mama in my building texted me and asked if we wanted to join them at the playground.
She’s got two kids, a three-year-old (Emmett) and one-year-old (Henry). We keep bumping into them at the playground and other events around Streeterville. The last time we were all at the playground, Ishu grew quite attached to Emmett. So much so that every other word out of his mouth was “EMM-ETT” between the time we got home and the time he fell asleep.
So when this mama reached out to me, I knew Ishu would be pretty excited about it. Windy or not.
So we bundled up real good and I buckled Ishu in to his stroller.
I opened the door to leave and then quickly realized I should probably take the trash and recycling out. And then, I thought, “Hm. Ishu hasn’t eaten in the last few hours. Let me grab a pouch.”
And THEN, I thought, “Well, last time Ishu used their toys. So let me see if I can grab something that Ishu can share with them.”
Meanwhile, Ishu is getting a little impatient. Wondering why he’s restrained while his mama is free to roam around doing shit.
And then all of a sudden, he yells really loudly, “EMM-ETT. MAMA, EMM-ETT.”
As if to say, “MAMA, Emmett is WAITING. WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING?!”
I have seriously never experienced a more “mom moment” as I did yesterday when this was happening.
I remember – so many days – when we were all ready to go in the garage and my mom would take what seemed like FOREVER to leave the house. Heck, it still happens!
But, now that I’m a mama myself, I know what she was doing.
She was doing everything.
Literally everything.
Funny how things come full circle. I’m sure my “EMM-ETT” loving boy – who showed me his sassy side yesterday – is going to grow up and realize that his mama wasn’t TRYING to make his life difficult. She was just doing things. She was doing ALL the things.
