Good morning! Last night, the baby and I were on our own as Ankur had his first overnight/on-call shift of his PGY-2 year. And, let’s just say, I’m so glad that those are few and far between!
I feel like he got pretty darn lucky that the specialty he was most passionate about is also one that has a pretty decent work-life balance. Even in residency. I mean, he still works 12+ hours a day, but to have most weekends off as a resident? That’s rare.
So, now he has the rest of today off. Which is nice.
He’ll be home in a few hours, so thought I’d quickly pop on while it’s still quiet around here and share some fun pictures of our weekend.
Friday
On Friday morning, we went to the last Wiggleworms concert of the summer. Or, at least the last one that happens at the Navy Pier.
Per usual, Ishu enjoyed the music. But they upped their game this time and brought a bubble machine. So he was a happy happy little clam, popping bubbles left and right.
We had intentions to stay for the second half. (They do one concert from 10:00-10:45 and then again from 11:00-11:45). But it was so, SO hot with no shade to escape from the sun. So, we packed up our things around 10:45 and went to the Children’s Museum.
We didn’t stay for too long. Again, that’s what is nice about having a membership. You don’t have to feel guilty about popping in for only 45 minutes.
Ankur got done early-ish that evening and spent the evening playing with Ishu, while I hung out in the kitchen making Shepherd’s pie. My first attempt at it. It didn’t LOOK very Pinteresty (which is why there is no pic, duh), but it tasted delicious!
Saturday
On Saturday morning, Ishu and I woke up before Ankur. So we watched Animal Planet in the living room while I drank my coffee. He loved seeing all the muh-a-knee (monkeys!).
Eventually, Ankur woke up, we all ate breakfast, and then I went off to the chiropractor. Around noon, we left for the RIC-NIC! It’s an annual picnic for residents, fellows, and faculty at the AbilityLab. (Called the RIC-NIC cause the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab used to be called the RIC: Rehab Institute of Chicago).
It was also the first time I got to meet some of Ankur’s co-residents and his program director. Along with some attendings. So that was really nice for me.
We would have stayed longer, but we were getting eaten alive by the mosquitoes (and my legs today are PROOF that I’ve got some sweet blood or something).
Ishu had fun blowing bubbles and playing with the dogs. But, mostly, his favorite activity was attempting to crawl into the ice cooler so he could eat all the ice.
When we got home, we Portaled with the fam. Ishu danced to Nikku Chacha playing with the guitar. We blew some bubbles. And we watched Babaji and Dadi practice their karaoke songs!
He was so exhausted, he fell asleep by 6:30. As did I. But Ankur poked me ’til I woke up. Nobody in this family wants me to sleep. UGH.
We made black bean burritos for dinner and finished watching The Mask of Zorro. I don’t even KNOW who I’ve become. One of the first things out of my mouth was, “This choreography is terrible” during one of the sword fights.
Who has Ankur turned me into and what happened to the girl whose favorite movie was The Notebook?
The movie was over before 9pm and I was happy to crawl into bed and finish reading this book. I loved it! Everyone says her other book is better, but I really enjoyed this one too! (I guess I’m getting my fill of rom-coms in the form of books since CLEARLY my movie taste has changed!).
Sunday
On Sunday, Ishu and I went back to the Children’s Museum! And I’m SO glad we did. Because Yola was working and we found out it was her last day. She’s still going to be available to them as needed, but pretty much not gonna be a regular on the schedule anymore.
Which breaks my heart because she’s AMAZING with all the kids that come to the playspace.
We ended up staying for 2 hours and it cut into Ishu’s nap time because I didn’t want to leave her! She’s a PhD candidate at the University of Illinois, Chicago and she’s pretty occupied with teaching and that whole PhD thing. But I feel very fortunate that our paths crossed. In just a few visits, I feel like I’ve learned so much from watching her and talking to her!
We said goodbye at the door and she put her hands up to the window, doing peek-a-boo with Ishu, and making him giggle. He said “Buhbye oh-ah!” and I reluctantly strapped him in the stroller to head home for nap time.
He was clearly an exhausted little pigeon because he ended up napping for 3.5 hours!
I spent most of the time reading and nanny hunting. I finished my book, started this one, and cleaned up a bit around the apartment.
When he woke up, he ate a pretty sizable meal. Which makes sense.
But, shortly after eating, we got on the Facebook Portal with the family. And they were all eating watermelon. And he was livid that he couldn’t grab the watermelon from the TV (and also pissed at mama that there wasn’t magically a watermelon sitting in our fridge).
So I rallied and plopped my 1-year old boss in the stroller and walked over to Target to get some watermelon.
I posted this photo on Instagram stories yesterday with the caption, “Couldn’t wait til we got home. I’m definitely not the mom I thought I would be.”
Seriously. I used to think I’d never beat to the tune of someone else’s drum. That when I had a kid, they’d deal with what we had in the fridge. That I’d never open up a snack at the grocery store. We’d be civilized people and pay for it and eat it at home (or, at the very least, in the car).
Well, we’re doing ALL THE THINGS I never thought I’d do.
So, take that Divya-in-your-20s. You and your smug face and ambitious thoughts had NO CLUE.
No clue.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go clean up the sticky floors from the watermelon juice that dripped on the floor yesterday. (Because I didn’t have it in me to clean it up last night. Another one of those many things I said I’d never do).
Happy Monday to all!

Sounds like a lovely weekend. That’s so sad about Yola leaving, but I’m glad you were there for her last official day!!! It sounds like you were definitely meant to meet her and learn from her, which is just lovely. 🙂
I’m currently reading Beach Read by Emily Henry and loving it!
