This past weekend was one of my favorite weekends to date.
No, it’s not because I stayed in on Friday night like a nerd.
It’s because on Saturday morning, I drove up to San Francisco with Jen and her mama and ran 10 miles through Golden Gate Park and up and through the Presidio.
I know 10 miles doesn’t seem like a huge accomplishment. I know that there are hundreds and thousands of people who can run 10-miles every weekend. At a pace that’s a LOT quicker than mine. But, I’m not comparing myself to other people. This was a really big accomplishment for ME. During my previous [unsuccessful] half marathon training attempts, the longest distance I ran was between 6-7 miles. So, on our drive up to the city, I was a little anxious and nervous that I wouldn’t be able to do it.
Luckily, Jen stayed with me the entire time. She kept checking in and reminding me that it was all mental. 100% mental. And that I could do anything if I just kept focused.
It also helped that there were some entertaining sites along the way. There was a 5K happening in the park – sponsored by 420 Lifestyles. And there was definitely a person dressed up as a joint walking around, cheering on the participants.
I did it. The same girl who couldn’t run a mile. It helps when you run for a purpose. Shameless plug – it’s not too late to donate to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Please help fund cancer research. Any contribution gets us one step closer to our goal!! (Thank you to all those incredible folks who have already donated!)
Moving on.
After our run, we went to brunch and then went home. Jen and I took our disgustingly smelly selves to the nail salon to get our nails (blisters and all!) done. And then I went home. And then proceeded to lie down on my bedroom floor for 2 hours. Staring up at the ceiling.
I wasn’t actually very sore. Just tired. Jen calls it a “running hangover.”
The rest of the weekend was pretty unproductive, but I didn’t feel ANY guilt for it. I was just happy to have completed the training run and I’m now even more excited about our 12-mile training run in Monterey.
Hope you all have a fantastic week! 🙂
