Overwhelmed and Overflowing

Ishu lost his first tooth a couple months ago when we were in California. His permanent tooth hasn’t come in fully yet, but you can see it. It’s halfway there. He has another wiggly tooth, but this second one’s taking its sweet time to fall out.

Anyway, last night, when we were walking home from the grocery store and he was eating a Stroopwafel, I heard him say something out loud, but couldn’t quite hear him.

“What’d you say?” I asked.

He turned around. “I said, ‘Welcome to the world, permanent tooth!'”

I must have had a confused look on my face because he quickly followed up with, “I said that because I’m chewing with it.”

Hahahahah.

IT WAS TOO FUNNY.

In Riyu news:

He peed on the potty for the first time yesterday. We thought he was pretending, but then he got up and peeked in and said, “I DID IT!”

And, still, I thought he was just going through the motions. But when I peeked in there was truly pee inside.

Wowie.

He’s probably ready for this whole thing and I’m gonna delay it a little bit longer because I like to do the least.

Hey, I’m keeping his potty out so he is free to use it whenever he’d like. I’m just not gonna tie us down to a potty right now, y’know? Halloween week doesn’t seem like the time to do it. The dead of winter feels like the time to do it. A couple more months and I’ll try harder.

But, man oh man, did he seem very pleased with himself.

When I picked Ishu up from school, the assistant director came up to us and commented on how big Riyu’s gotten. I said, “Yeah! I mean, Ishu I haven’t told you this yet, but he peed in the potty for the first time today!”

And PEOPLE, if you could have seen the way Ishu’s eyes lit up for his little brother. I just wish I could have a camera on the two of them constantly.

I mean, they’ve got their typical sibling stuff. The fighting over the same toy. The anger Ishu feels when Riyu wrecks something of his. No doubt.

But OH MY GOD, the love. It’s just so deep.

Last night, Ishu was hangry and tired and crying real big about something real small. And Riyu came over to him, patted his arm, and kept whispering, “It’s okay. It’s okay. It’s okay.”

Because that’s exactly what Ishu says to Riyu when Riyu’s the one having the big feelings.

The way he was able to mimic that behavior in the right moment in the right way?!

MY HEART. MY HEART. MY HEART.

I can’t even convey to you the warm ooey-gooey feelings I get in my chest when I watch these two together.

So yeah.

One kid’s welcoming his permanent teeth to this world. The other one’s peeing in a tiny plastic toilet. And I’m just here trying to survive Halloween week.

My mind is a little overwhelmed but my heart is completely overflowing.
