We lost an important member of our family yesterday.
Rosie Mathur. She was 11 years old and lived a very long life filled with lots of love and eggs and watermelon.
Despite the fact that she was an older dog, every time we took her to the park, everyone we passed was convinced she was a puppy because of her excitable nature.
I never grew up with any pets. So I never understood how people grew so attached to their animals.
And then I met Rosie and I understood.
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of getting home in San Ramon and opening up the door and seeing this sweet pup holding a toy in her mouth. Her tail slapping up against the wall, beating in rhythmic nature because she can’t seem to contain her excitement.
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of going on a hike with her. And watching how she runs back and forth between the leader and the sweep. Making sure everyone is accounted for. Taking inventory of all her people. Always following the sound of Mom’s voice.
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of watching your baby boy lay down next to her. Touching her nose. Petting her belly. Doing all but climbing her. She never made a fuss about it. Despite the fact that his high-pitched scream would oftentimes scare her.
I credit Rosie for changing my feelings toward dogs. I used to fear them. Cross the street when I saw one walking my way. Avoid them at all costs.
But because of her sweet and loving nature, I have become the person that walks into an elevator with a dog and asks their human if I can pet them. I’ve become the person that, like Ishu, prefers the dog park to the people park most days.
Rosie has changed me.
I feel so honored to have gotten to know her and love her for 7 years of her life.
Rest in peace, sweet Rosie. Thank you for bringing so much joy to our life. We will miss you so, so much.
