About a year ago, my sister got us the Facebook portal. She uses it for work and really liked the zoom in, zoom out feature as people move around the room.
At the time, it didn’t make sense to me. I had a phone and a computer that FaceTimed. I could video chat through Whatsapp on my phone. It felt like an unnecessary device. So I returned it.
Then, when we all got COVID back in December and had to quarantine for 14 days at home, my mama had ordered us a FB portal again. And we decided to try it out. And now we absolutely love it.
We connected it to our TV and, since pretty much everyone in the family has one now, we can call anyone and it feels like they’re hanging out in our living room with us.
It’s also been nice as Ishaan has grown a little bigger because he’s so grabby with the phone and, this way, he can engage with the people on video without a device in his hand.
We also connected my Spotify account to it and it’s an easy way to have music playing throughout the day. He’s been loving the Sing Along playlist and the Disney playlist we have on there. (Almost as much as his papa does).
Anyway, we usually hide the remotes from Ishaan since he broke our last FB portal remote by using it as a teether. But, just the other day, I left the remote hanging out on the couch where he could access it. I said, “No no.” And, instead of lifting it to his mouth like he usually does, he walked over to me, handed me the remote, and said, “Moo moo.” Which I now realize is his way of saying “music.”
I can’t even EXPLAIN how amazing it is to see his little brain at work. How he absorbs every little thing we do and say. And then turns around and copies it all.
It’s amazing amazing amazing.
And it also makes me realize I need to cut the “shit” out of my vocabulary. Literally.
I’ve got a little parrot in the house.

The idea is a nice one but my wife would never go for always chatting on video. She hates how she looks on video and would feel the need to be more presentable every time someone called lol.

Oh my goodness, “moo moo” for music. That’s adorable. And I love the idea of the FB portal, so it’s like having family and friends in the room with you. Much better than a tiny iPhone screen.
