A few days ago, Ishu and I were playing with some letter tiles and he pulled out the letters I-S-H-U and also K.
He smushed ’em together and he said, “Look, Ishuk!”
“Ishuk?!” I responded, acting shocked. “That’s not your name, silly goose! There’s an extra letter.”
“Ishuk, Ishuk, Ishuk,” he repeated, giggling to himself.
Flash forward to yesterday, while I was cooking dinner, Ishu was tracing the letters on his placemat.
“Mama, I want to draw a heart on my hand,” he said.
“Sure, go ahead,” knowing we’d have to give him a bath anyway. “Draw a heart. Draw whatever you want.”
As I topped the orzo with the roasted butternut squash, I could hear him at the table, “K Ishu heart.”
“K? Why the letter K?” I asked. Wondering where this obsession was coming from.
“K is for I know how to write it,” he responded, matter-of-factly.
Ha.
For the past few weeks, K has been the letter of the day.
I think there was a time when he wrote it reversed.
But now there’s clearly a lot of pride that he can write it the right way.
So, K is the letter of the day.
K – not for kangaroo. Not for kite. But K for “I know how to write it.”
