Good morning!
I played Suzy Homemaker all day yesterday and I’m exhausted. Give me a room full of children throwing temper tantrums; I’m much better at navigating my way through that than attempting to feng shui our new apartment. (I even had to Google the term, ‘feng shui,’ to make sure I was spelling it correctly. If I can’t spell it, I certainly can’t DO it).
The movers finally came yesterday so we’ve got a fully furnished apartment. Maybe TOO furnished. This little space can’t hold nearly as much as my old apartment could.
I woke up around 4AM unintentionally. The alarm was set for 5:30, but I was wide awake so I hopped out of bed and started breakfast.
Around 8AM, the movers showed up and started emptying out their massive truck. I didn’t realize how much stuff I had accumulated over the past few years until I saw it sitting out there waiting to be moved into the apartment.
I knew, just from looking at the pile on the street, that there would not be enough room in this apartment for all of my belongings. So, instead of panicking, I calmly turned on my audiobook as I began emptying the contents of each box.
Or, in the words of Jennifer Merz, I had to “KonMari that shit.”
We have very limited counter space. Very limited kitchen space, in general. But it’s also really important for me to be semi-hygienic so, even though there wasn’t much space to do so, I made sure to wash every dish that came out of the boxes. In the process, one of my wine glasses broke.
I wasn’t too sad about it.
In fact, I was pretty ecstatic because it was one less thing that I had to find a place for.
The living room, unlike the kitchen, is HUGE. I feel like it needs to be filled up with more stuff. But I have enough kitchen stuff to remind me that the last thing I need right now is more stuff.
So….should I fill the living room with all my extra kitchen items?
I feel like that’d be really confusing for our visitors if they found a bag of chips under a seat cushion or a crockpot holding up the TV.
In any case, I’m open to suggestions on how to increase storage in a teeny-tiny kitchen. In a way that’s feng-shui-esque.
Ugh. Life was so much simpler when we lived in dorm rooms. Back when all we cared about was having a thumbtack wall so we could show off how popular we were with all our pictures from our disposable cameras.
This is hard work.
If anyone wants to throw some suggestions at me, I’m all ears.
How do I make our apartment bigger and hold more things?
How do I decorate without having to do it myself?
How do I get rid of these boxes that are all-consuming and seem to multiply when I’m not looking?
That is all.
G’day.

I was wondering how things were going. As usual, your update brought a smile to my face. I love how you write. I think when your mom sees what you wrote she will be on a plane down there to you. Moms love a challenge like this. Keep us posted honey.

Hahaha, my mom absolutely would have tried to come except I’m heading back home for two weeks tomorrow! So she has no time to fly over cause I’m flying right back! <3 Hope you're having the best weekend!

I wish I had good advice for you. We moved from 2100 square feet in Seattle to 850 square feet in LA. We literally had to just choose the very few things we wanted to keep and get rid of the rest. Then when we got here we had to get rid of a bunch more because we still had too much. It’s amazing what you don’t need when there’s no place to put it. As for the boxes, get rid of them as soon as they’re empty! I felt completely overwhelmed until those things were gone! It was only about a week but it was really stifling having them. Good luck 🙂

You’re SO right! We drove to the dump and threw out the last of the boxes and, already, I feel so much better.
It’s pretty crazy to think about how much I’ve tossed over the past few weeks. But it’s also nice to know how we really don’t need much to survive. Like, why the heck did I have over 20 pieces of Tupperware?!
