Ankur and I have found plenty of opportunities to sneak away and do our own exploring of the island while grandparents are on Ishu duty.
Yesterday, we went and got coffee from this place. Ankur did a little bit of work while I sat near the water and had my weekly therapy session. Felt like the ultimate therapy session with a view like that.
Then, we went and had breakfast at Slappy Cakes. A cocktail at 9am, don’t mind if we do.
We brought back Hawaiian pancakes for the parents to enjoy. And then, once Ishu was up from his nap, we all got ready to go for a walk/hike on the Kapalua Coastal Trail.
There were a lot of openings to go down on the rocks or on the beach. At one point, we meandered off the trail to watch the waves splash against the rocks. Ishu enjoyed seeing the big splashes and feeling the cool mist on his face.
He is a cautious little kid. But he’s also super curious. It’s fun to watch him observe others and then slowly ease his way into something.
On the walk back, he wanted to go up and down the rocks by himself. If anyone held his hand, he went back and did it again, but on his own. Ha. Our little independent baby.
Before leaving the trail, we stopped at the beach to wade into the water for a bit.
I think – more than the ocean – Ishu just loved being naked outside. Haha. He is happiest when he’s running around without pants on. “NANGU MANGU,” he squeals, rubbing his hands all over his belly and chest. “ISHU NANGU MANGU.”
When we got home, we ate homemade sandwiches and everyone settled in for the evening. Once Ishu fell asleep for the night, Ankur and I, again, took advantage of the best built-in babysitters and drove to Lahaina. We went to Down the Hatch where they have live music on Tuesdays.
We stayed for a bit. Trying to muster up the energy to be YOUNG AGAIN. In the middle of us chatting, two guys came up to order drinks at the bar. I could hear them say, “I’M ON A VISION QUEST.” “YEAH MAN, I’M ON A VISION QUEST TOO.”
The minute they left with drinks in hand, I pulled out my phone to Google what a “vision quest” was to see if that’s what the cool TikTokers are talking about today.
And that was the point that I realized I needed to embrace this whole aging, droopy-eyed-while-drinking phase of life we’re in. We finished up our drinks and called it a night. And I was beyond excited to get home to curl up in bed to finish my book.
(Of course, I read a page and then passed out immediately. Thank you Moscow Mule for that).
This morning, we hung out in the pool for a bit.
I’ve always wanted to swim in a pool by the ocean and today was the day! It was fun having the whole family splashing around, swimming under the rain. When we dried up, we watched the crabs crawling around on the rocks below us. And looked around for rainbows!
Now, with our bellies full of sandwiches, the grandparents left for a walk while Ishu and Ankur are right here, taking a nap. Resting up before the big luau tonight!
That being said, I’m going to finish my book and probably take a little nap myself.
Gotta brace myself for all the hula-ing and feasting to come.
Have a good one!
