I had an interview with LAUSD this week. It was more of a “screening” than an actual interview. Apparently LAUSD schools are only allowed to hire teachers off of something called an “eligible teacher list,” so this interview was just to get me on that elitist list of individuals. 😉
Aside from that interview, I’ve only heard back from one other place. Aspire Public Schools in Huntington Park. My interview is on May 30th. It’s going to be a demo lesson where I work with students for about 20 minutes. The standard that I will be re-teaching in that small group is: 7NS 1.2 – Add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers (integers, fractions, and terminating decimals) and take positive rational numbers to whole number powers.
I think I’m going to do something with adding/subtracting integers. It’s just so difficult to come up with a lesson when you have no idea or no background on the students you’re going to be working with. But they gave me the teacher’s contact information so hopefully I can extract some important information from her – strengths/areas of need, resources available?
I like the idea of a demo lesson though. I think I’d be much better at illustrating myself as an effective educator when I’m actually implementing a lesson – rather than sitting in front of a panel of people talking about how great I am. Not so good at that.
I just want more interviews at this point. I want to feel like I’m actually making progress – that I’m steps…no, LEAPS closer to becoming a teacher. And I want to interview up north. Not in LA. Although I need to have options…..so I’ve gotta apply everywhere I can. Cross your fingers!
