I threw my scissors at her one day when I was mad. They hit her in the mouth and chipped off half her tooth.
Still, she loved me.
I yelled at her when she tried to help me jump from one rock to another.
Still, she loved me.
I screamed and shoved her when she interrupted me as I was singing the Alphabet song.
Still, she loved me.
She’d pick me up, twirl me around, squeeze my cheeks, and tell me she loved me. Over and over and over again. Even when I didn’t deserve it.
But, there’s gotta be something to that kind of love.
The unconditional kind.
The kind of love where you just pour your heart into a person without expecting anything in return.
Sometimes, the return on that love isn’t immediate.
But – as the receiving end of that love – I can say this. That kind of unreserved and unrestricted love does have an impact.
Because, as I sit here, 25 years later, I realize how much has shifted since we were kids.
I kicked and slapped and screamed as a child. And she loved me through it all. She’s been there to guide me, to be (brutally) honest with me, and to hold me close through the ever-changing phases of our lives.
I may not have known it then, but I certainly know it now. My sister is the best of many blessings. She’s my built-in best friend.
My heart will forever beat with hers and my love for her is infinite. Thank you, Sissy, for loving me when I was at my most unlovable.
You are my better half and I love you with all of my insides.
Happy birthday to my best friend.
