Functional over stylish has always been my motto.
As a teacher. As a human being who dresses herself. And now as a mama.
I never cared if my anchor charts were Pinterest perfect. Did the content make sense to the child? Could I slap them to the wall and refer to them over and over again? Then they did the job.
I never cared to wear heels or matching accessories. Did my Skechers allow me to comfortably run after kids leaving their classroom? Did my leggings allow me to sit down, cross-legged on the floor so I could be on my students’ level? Then they did the job.
And now, as we settle into our new apartment, I don’t care that we don’t have a coffee table. Or bed frames. Or decorative pieces. Does my child have lots of space to run around and build towers? Is he able to climb on and off the bed independently because it’s so low to the ground? Then, yes, this space is wonderful.
When my parents walked in last week, I joked with them. “I don’t know how to decorate a house, but I sure as heck know how to set up a classroom.” Because, yeah, we’ve got the classroom vibe in our living room.
But who the heck cares?
It’s functional.
And it’s absolutely perfect for us.

I love stylish. But I also appreciate how difficult that is to maintain with a toddler. Granted Mila is not fully mobile just yet but she gets into everything and we have an exposed cabinet with dishes she tries to pull every morning. So yea we are in need of a functional upgrade around here, too. PS: your space is perfect!!
