The first day of school always gives me the butterflies. My first day of first grade. My first period in my senior year of high school. The butterflies showed up every September without fail. Will everyone like my outfit? Will I like the kids in my class? Who will I get to sit next to? I hope we get homework tonight [yes, I was one of THOSE kids.]
As a teacher, I thought that feeling would eventually go away. I thought those butterflies would fly right out of my tummy. I was, after all, the teacher. I was on the other side. I was the one with the proverbial chalk in my hand.
Turns out that those butterflies never really go away. No matter how long you’ve been in the field. No matter how much you already know your students before they take their seats in your classroom.
The first day jitters are real. For students and teachers alike.
But it’s only because something so exciting is about to take place. And it’s just our body’s way of preparing for it.
The first day of school has come and gone.
I’ll see the butterflies again in a year.
In the mean time, I’ll be enjoying my time with my babies.
