Yesterday, I did a workout in the garage while Ishu was busy eating lunch in the living room. I tied a band around the stationary bike and did some squats and rows, counting up to 15. At one point, Ishu walked into the garage and climbed on top of the bench, staring at his mama. Likely wondering what-in-the-heck she was doing.
Eventually, his Nani came in and took him back inside, allowing me to finish my workout.
Once I was over, I went inside, washed my hands and face, and called out for Ishu.
I looked around the living room and then called out his name. I couldn’t find him. But heard some voices coming from the garage.
I opened up the garage door and saw my mom and Ishu near the exercise equipment. Ishu was holding the band, bending his knees up and down, counting, “1, 2, 3, 4, etc.”
My mom said, “Look at this big kid copying his mama!”
And I felt my heart explode. Not just from watching this little monkey be so cute. But for the knowledge that my kid is watching my every move and trying to be just like his mama. I love when he catches me doing something for myself. I love the moments he says, “Mama doing exercise!” Because it reminds him that, sure, he is Mama’s whole world, but Mama also does things that make her happy and feel stronger.
I want my kid to grow up knowing that it’s important to take care of himself and I think the best way to teach that is by showing him.
Some days, that’s harder than others.
But yesterday definitely felt like a win in that department.
“Ishu doing exercise like Mama!”
