Better Than Yesterday

We’ve reached the point of our journaling journey (say that ten times fast) where we’re officially past the honeymoon phase and now my kids just use it as an opportunity to ask me a zillion questions.Like Riyu randomly shouting, “MAMA, HOW DO YOU SPELL CHICKEN NUGGET?”

So, we’ll still keep this built into our schedule, but I’m no longer pretending this is my “quiet, peaceful time.” I gotta find that elsewhere.

Yesterday felt like a LONG day. The morning was chaotic. We were heading out to drop Ishu to school and walked into the elevator with two other people. Ishu said, “How come it smells like soap or something?”

I said something like, maybe someone’s real clean ’cause they showered this morning.

To which my child replied, “Well you look sweaty.”

Cool.

And then Riyu didn’t nap yesterday. Which may not seem like a big deal to some people. But when you sleep with your kid (meaning he’s up when you’re up, no matter how early you get up. And he falls asleep when you sleep) and there’s literally no part of the day where someone isn’t yapping directly in your face, that DOES SOMETHING TO A PERSON and I was not my best self last night.

Luckily, I get another day to do it again.

And it’s been a little better.

Riyu came with me to a haircut this morning.

And I thought I’d give him a little mid-day bath, but he’s been very anti-bath these days.

I asked, “Do you want a color bath?”

No.

“Purple bath? A yellow bath? A bubble bath?”

No.

“Do you want a popsicle bath? Ice cream bath?”

No.

I looked away.

He whispered, “What about a red bath?”

“WHAT ABOUT A RED BATH?” I asked.

No.

So,

cool.

Okay that’s it.

Today isn’t perfect. But it’s better than yesterday.

And sometimes that’s all you can hope for.

Here’s to tomorrow. And maybe a red bath in our future. (Okay. Actually maybe a different color because it always just looks like they’re swimming around in blood and that’s just gross).
