Over the winter break, Ishu somehow picked up the word, “too,” and started using it appropriately.
“Ishu go up stairs.”
“Dadi go up stairs too,” he’d say right after.
At some point he heard it in context, he started saying it, and then he applied it to other situations CORRECTLY.
MIND FREAKING BLOWN.
Toddler brains will never stop amazing me.
He also, in the past couple of weeks, has been using “another” a lot.
“Basketball, another basketball,” he says as he attempts to hold two basketballs to his chest at once.
He uses it correctly. For the most part.
But the other day, we were reading “Giraffes Don’t Dance.” There’s a page where Gerald the Giraffe is dancing across the page. And, obviously, on a static page, they’re trying to show the reader that Gerald is dancing by having him in three separate spots.
But Ishu doesn’t understand that. While his toddler brain is real impressive, it doesn’t grasp what’s happening and what the illustrator’s intention was.
So he points to an image of Gerald and says, “Gee-yaf.”
And then he points to Gerald on the same page again.
“nother gee-yaff, nother gee-yaff,” he says.
“That’s the same giraffe!” I tried explaining. “It’s Gerald.”
To which he responded, “Jay-ild. nother jay-ild, nother jay-ild.”
At which point I just laughed. Because, yeah, his brain is a sponge. But it also doesn’t fully interpret what’s happening. Some day, he’ll figure it out. But, right now, it’s so much fun for this mama to step back and see how he interprets it all.
