Balance.
When you hike 12 miles and then follow it up with french fries from KFC.
Balance.
When you work 10-12 hour days during the week and then forget to bring your computer charger home over the weekend so you just can’t get any work done. #sorrynotsorry
Balance.
When you opt for sleepy-time tea since you had a cocktail with dinner the night before.
Life is about balance.
And I’m finding that it applies to all facets of my life. Ever since I left grad school and entered the wonderful world of education, I’ve found that there has been this really strong push toward integrating technology in the classroom.
And, while I recognize it’s importance, I also value the education that I had growing up. The kind where I did projects, built pyramids, and crafted volcanoes with paper mâché. Because, while the word work and vocabulary quizzes did benefit me in multiple ways, it was the hands-on experiences I had that helped me equate education with LOVE and EXCITEMENT.
That is why it makes me so happy to know that our kids are getting Enrichment opportunities like Music, Gardening, and Art. They need to know that there is so much more to this world than the content being covered in their classrooms. And I want them to be exposed to so much more than just the common core standards. Because life is, after all, all about balance.

My favorite project or assignment in elementary school….man I love this question! I remember building a great replica volcano with my Dad for science class, writing a short story about American settlers, and doing a research paper on the Anasazi Indians. I can’t believe I remember that stuff, and love your question for prompting me to think about it!
