Good morning!
I gotta share something that’s been running through my mind.
I can’t take credit for it. One of my favorite coaches, Sedona, over at OrangeTheory says it during almost every single class I take with her. And, lately, it’s resonating with me beyond the four walls of the studio.
If you’ve never taken an OTF class, there are three paces we move between on the treadmill.
- 1. A “base pace” (a pace where you can comfortably stay at for 20-30 minutes. A pace where you can have a conversation and not be keeling over, dying).
- 2. A “push pace,” a little more uncomfortable. Your heart rate should be moving on up. And…
- 3. An “all out pace,” where you basically try to empty your tank.
Anyway, sometimes we do these workouts where we’ll move through a push and then an “all out” and then get back to recovery for a minute. And then we gotta go through that all over again.
But while we’re all recovering, tongues out, trying to catch our breath, Sedona will say something about “one-upping” it on the next round.
One-upping. A reminder that we got through it, we survived, and maybe we can push ourselves a little more.
But the best part about it is that she follows it up with, “THERE ARE LOTS OF WAYS TO ONE UP.”
She’ll continue and say something like, “If you feel inclined to increase your pace 0.1 or 0.2 mph, do it.” Or, “Power Walkers, if you want to up your incline 1 or 2, go for it.”
But she always says this.
And this is the freaking BEST. Because I’m always THE RED-FACED, EXHAUSTED, JUST-TRYING-TO-KEEP-UP person and sometimes I don’t have the ability to “one-up” my incline or speed. So when Sedona says this, it just feels RIGHT.
Okay, have I hyped it up enough?
Yeah?
She says, “THERE ARE LOTS OF WAYS TO ONE UP. ONE-UPPING CAN LOOK LIKE A LITTLE MORE CONFIDENCE. MAYBE YOU STAY AT THE SAME PACE OR INCLINE, BUT YOU’RE WALKING WITH A LITTLE MORE SWAGGER.”
I freaking love that.
Because it’s so fitting for my time in the studio. Sometimes I’m ABSOLUTELY NOT going to up my incline and speed, thank you very much. I will die if I do.
But it’s also so fitting for my time outside of the studio.
We are a society that’s always trying to do more and be more. We can’t ever sit tight and get nice and settled where we’re at, because there’s always some new goal to strive for.
Which isn’t always a bad thing, I suppose.
But, there’s something to be said about being solid where you are. About being confident and consistent and doing things in a sustainable way before you make the move to change things up.
DOING THINGS WITH A LITTLE MORE SWAGGER.
So, from me (actually, from Sedona) to ya’ll:
CONSISTENCY IS KEY. Maybe you don’t need to make a new vision board. Maybe you don’t need to think about the next accomplishment you’re going to aim for. PERHAPS JUST LOOK AROUND AND FIGURE OUT HOW TO KEEP THE GOOD GOING FOR A BIT.
Okay?
Okay.
Sorry for all the caps.
I’m clearly feeling my feels here. Shout-out to Sedona today and every day for making my workouts (and my life!) oh so enjoyable.
